A-B PROJECTS STUDIO SESSION JANUARY 2025
'BEING BORN'

I am excited to announce that I have been invited by A-B PROJECTS to hold an STUDIO SESSION as a lead artist during January 2025. A-B Projects is a platform for community, critical dialogue, and material experimentation that expand and redefine the ceramics field. The platform is US-based in Portland, OR and directed by Nicole Seisler.

Studio Sessions are an online platform where an intimate group of global studio mates gather online 1x per week for 4 weeks under the guidance of a lead artist to discuss specific ideas and to experiment with how those ideas can take form in clay. (statement from A-B PROJECTS, Nicole Seisler)

'BEING BORN'
There are emotional, material, and experiential parallels between our intimate and complex experiences of being born, giving birth to another human, and the creation of work in clay. Alongside lead artist Julia Schuster—who is also a doula—participants will consider the role of care across and within these processes.

Much like clay, our bodies are simultaneously fragile and resilient, capable of change and endowed with memory. What can we, as tactile makers, learn or translate from the path of the doula and the process of birth? How can we compassionately listen to clay? How can we compassionately respond to each other?

The session is scheduled for Sundays, January 5, 12, 19 and 26, 2025
from 9-11am PST (Los Angeles time)/ 5-7pm CET (Central European Time)

Registration is $250 and includes all four sessions.

Participants gather via Zoom.

People from all over the world are welcome to join!

WRITING RESIDENCY SLÖJD & SKRIFT 2024

I am currently part of an exciting residency called Slöjd & Skrift taking the format of a "residency at home" with digital sessions, including seminars and text conversations (period: May-December 2024). Residens Slöjd och Skrift 2024 is funded by the Board for Handicrafts and the Cultural Administration of Västra Götaland, Sweden. The aim of the  residency is to visualise crafts and craftsmanship through words. Crafts are often referred to as "tacit knowledge" but this residency will explore and deepen how crafts and words can reinforce each other. The residency is led by writer, literature critic and teacher Burcu Şahin.

UPCOMING TALK & PERFORMANCE
at Powers of Love: Enchantment to Disaffection
, The fifth PARSE biennial artistic research conference
organised by the Artistic Faculty, University of Gothenburg, Sweden takes place November 15-17, 2023.

I will contribute to the conference with a talk & performance titled "Wondering: Love (clay, memory, birth)".

Plenary Speakers: Kim Anno (US) | Chaya Czernowin (IL) | Hiroshi Ishiguro (JP) | Ingela Johansson (SE) | Zara Julius (ZA) | Mara Lee (SE) | Jamie Philbert and Rondel Benjamin (TT)

The fifth biennial PARSE conference, “Powers of Love: Enchantment to Disaffection”, considers the transformative potential of love, friendship, the erotic, enchantment and care in artistic practices. Within wider cultural contexts, artistic practices are engaged in power politics through historical, contextual, institutional and discursive formations. This conference focuses on the connections between embodiment, passion, (dis)affection and critical thought, the grounds for being-in-common and the tensions between singular relationality and institutional structures.

The conference will take place in Gothenburg and aims to create an atmosphere for engaged dialogue through plenary sessions, panels, screenings, events and multiple format presentations.

For more information on the conference and how to register please visit the PARSE website.

PALINSESTI 2019

rassegna d’arte contemporanea

TU CHE MI GUARDI
ANNA PONTEL LETIZIA SCARPELLO JULIA SCHUSTER
curated by Giorgia Gastaldon and Michele Tajariol

Opening Saturday 9th November 2019 - exhibition open until 19.01.2020
Castello, San Vito al Tagliamento 33078, Italy

With its rich programme of exhibitions and events, the contemporary art exhibition Palinsesti has reached ist 14th edition in 2019. This year, once again, national and international artists are involved in five different locations across San Vito al Tagliamento and Pordenone. The main event of the 2019 edition of Palinsesti is, as marked by a long-established tradition, represented by an experimental expositive project, which is aimed at analysing an existential and aesthetic theme through the tools of contemporary visual research.

This years exhibition is titled "Tu che mi guardi" in direct reference to Adriana Cavarero’s seminal essay "Tu che mi guardi, tu che mi racconti". "Tu che mi guardi" (You, who are looking at me) is set up at the Castello (the old castle of the town) and consists of projects by Anna Pontel, Letizia Scarpello and Julia Schuster.

A catalogue has been published, which is for sale on the exhibition venue or can be read as pdf link here

INTERNATIONAL ACADEMY OF CERAMICS - NEW MEMBER
I am thrilled to have been elected as a member of the IAC - International Academy of Ceramics! A big honour indeed as this membership provides evidence of excellency in the practice of the ceramic arts and consists of a truly fantastic network. The IAC was founded 1952 in Geneva, Switzerland, is an official partner of the UNESCO and has over 600 members hailing from all continents.

Since my journey as a ceramicist thus far has already gifted me the chance to work in a number of very different educational and cultural settings, this international membership means a great deal to me to expand my network and to give back. As a IAC member I am now representing my native country Austria and I look forward to contribute to the vital role clay plays in our world and its inter-disciplinary connection with other mediums, disciplines and our environment.

I look forward to travel to Finland in the summer of 2020 to attend the 49th IAC Congress in Posio and Rovaniemi! The co-organizers of the Congress are the Arctic Ceramic Center (ACC). This biennial event is a space devoted to meetings, study and debates between the members of the Academy and numerous actors of the local and international ceramic scene. This Congress will take place under the theme “On the Edge”.

I wish to sincerely thank these three women and renowned ceramicists: Gundi Dietz, Jennifer Forsberg, and Elaine Olafson Henry for generously advocating my work.

Check out my member's profile on the IAC website: https://www.aic-iac.org/en/member/julia-schuster/
